ABSTRACT

If you are a parent and thinking of leaving teaching, you are by no means alone, and you have nothing to feel guilty about. This leap is very possible! This chapter examines a range of research to explore the reasons parents – mothers and fathers – feel compelled to leave the classroom and, through six case studies, illuminates a variety of options available if life in the classroom is not currently working for you. All the roles pursued still provide a sense of purpose and allow these former teachers to maintain a strong connection to a social mission. Discover why each of them made the leap and how they transitioned to a new role to achieve a better work-life balance.
