ABSTRACT

According to 2018 research by the Equality and Human Rights Commission, ‘a quarter of employers felt it was reasonable during recruitment to ask women about their future plans to have children’ – a practice that is entirely illegal. Results from a Department for Work and Pensions report indicated that between 11% and 18% of pregnant women experienced unfair treatment because of their pregnancy. This ‘unfair treatment’ included ‘unpleasant comments from employer and/or colleagues’, ‘failed to gain a promotion that they felt they deserved or otherwise sidelined’ and ‘given unsuitable work or workloads’. The MTPT Project was set up to inspire, empower and connect teachers choosing to complete continued professional development whilst on childcare leave. It promotes parents having as many choices as possible to support their own and their families’ well-being.
