ABSTRACT

Expecting a child is a significant period for any parent-to-be with far-reaching consequences for almost every aspect of their life. This chapter examines how that impact is felt on the careers of those working in schools. It also highlights how, as school communities and leaders, we can improve the experiences of expectant parents in our schools. The chapter aims to empower expectant parents to make the choices which are right for them including the option to pursue career progression if they wish.

The chapter outlines the legal rights of expectant mothers and fathers in the workplace covering pregnancy, adoption and surrogacy. Case studies are used to explore this further and to exemplify some of the excellent support which schools provide.

Sadly, not all pregnancies have happy endings and the chapter outlines legal rights related to miscarriage and baby loss as well as provides some examples about how schools can best support their team members at this difficult time.
