ABSTRACT

This chapter explores what professional development undertaken during maternity or paternity leave looks like. It outlines what is involved in the MTPT Project’s Accreditation (the only formal qualification aimed specifically at teachers on parental leave) and shares other Maternity/Paternity CPD possibilities from our community: from leadership development, subject knowledge and career planning, to school improvement, coaching, formal qualifications and how we learn from our babies.

The chapter explains the law and discriminatory practices surrounding CPD whilst on parental leave. It also shows how maternity/paternity CPD can be one solution to retaining new parents in the teaching profession through empowering and developing them at the time at which they are most vulnerable to end their teaching career.
