ABSTRACT
The dire calamity that made the nation for the moment to stagger as a drnuhen man occurred in 1862. The Federal, which has always formed the National Association—those who believe in purely self-government, and those, who think, and as people think rightly, that outsiders’ interference on the part of any body, however learned; is wrong, to say nothing of the fact that faction might be called upon to rule, or ignorance sit in the seat of direction. The Federal districts were so strong that they carried with them a few that really believed in the dependent principle, but who could not see their way to the reign of a Towers or a Whitehorn over the mining population—men who were utterly ignorant of their wants. The hostilities waxed stronger and stronger every day for several months, papers were distributed by thousands, and money was scattered freely to secure the destruction of all who opposed the objects of the outside party.
