ABSTRACT

Thomas Wharrier was charged at the same time with a similar offence, committed on the same day and on the same man, and in both cases they were sentenced to two months’ imprisonment. On August 14th there were several cases before the Newcastle Police Court for alleged assaults on foreign workmen, when imprisonment was inflicted, some for six weeks and others for two months each. The prisoner at the bar, having bills in his hand, thought he was sufficiently fortified to meet the policemen, and therefore waited until they came up Sergeant Brown asked what he was doing there, but the defendant only used an improper expression in reply. The men distributing the bills were legitimately engaged earning an “honest penny,” and the gentlemen who engaged them can confirm this statement if required. The defendant, who was a man on strike, formerly worked at Sir William Armstrong and Co.’s works.
