ABSTRACT

The agitation among the workmen employed in the Clyde shipbuilding trade for an advance of wages has resulted in the masters agreeing to close their establishments, and make a general lock-out all over the Clyde. The movement among the workmen began early in March. The progress of the movement, its effect on the Clyde shipbuilding-trade, and the position taken up by the masters have been fully reported in these columns from time to time. Its effect on the trade has been most disastrous so far as the booking of new orders is concerned, and much valuable work has passed away from the Clyde. A meeting of master shipbuilders was held yesterday afternoon, in the Religious Institution Rooms, 172, Buchanan Street. The Chairman said the meeting was now in possession of the facts of the case, and it was for it to decide what steps should be taken under the circumstances.
