ABSTRACT

The Socialists, from the fact that they were formulating a new ideal, had to appear as critics of Trade Unionism, and were consequently put down as being both censorious and truculent. The New Trade Unionism is evidence for Socialists are responsible for calling it into existence. Socialists must make it their first object to get some common basis of agreement with Trade Unionists, and endeavour to get the latter to admit that the object of Trade Unionism is to raise the standard of living and prevent exploitation. Strikes are the logical outcome of Trade Unionism, just as wages are the logical outcome of capitalism. Its members believe that there is no real antagonism between Socialism and Trade Unionism, and, with the object of reconciling any differences of opinion, they have issued the pamphlet setting forth their views as to a possible common basis of agreement upon which they can work together.
