ABSTRACT
‘The Future Power’ of the title is the working people, and the focus of most of the book, recounted by a doctor from the East End of London, is a general strike of the labouring classes which heralds a new socialist, collectivist future. Through careful planning an organization of the people brings the country to a halt. Meanwhile every kind of industry was carried on, and every kind of work done as before. The work-men still attended punctually to their duties, and were as obedient to their employers, as if the existing state of things would last for ever. The engine-drivers had received directions to take their trains to the nearest large station directly the hour of midnight struck, and to grease the machinery, rake out the fires, and leave them. The gas lamps were lighted in some of the streets, but a great many were without any light at all.
