ABSTRACT

Marjorie Orr updates her chapter from Memory in Dispute. In presenting a history of the false memory syndrome Movements, she looks closely at their origins and promoters. She provides comments from the adult children of the False Memory Syndrome Foundation member parents as well as the media involvement and response and the failure of false memory syndrome scientific arguments. Accuracy about Abuse was set up in 1994 as an information service with the aim of counteracting the misuse of “false memory” as a wholesale defence against allegations of sexual abuse, even where those alleging childhood abuse had never forgotten, or been in therapy. Membership figures for both the US and British false memory associations were regularly exaggerated in the media. Elizabeth Loftus herself was sexually abused as a child by a male babysitter and admits to blacking the perpetrator out of her memory, although she never forgot the incident.
