ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the dynamic definition of community art therapy and provides a collection of first-hand experiences from art therapists practicing community art therapy in various settings. The reflections from art therapists offer the reader insight into the complex and fluid nature of practicing clinically within the community setting and creating spaces for artmaking as a form of collective healing. This chapter illustrates themes of community artmaking as a means of cultivating belonging and connection; dealing with trauma; strengthening support systems; creating opportunities for social justice; and opening the conversation about sustainable practices that support the community beyond the space and beyond the life of the program or the organization.
