ABSTRACT

The quilt image for the cover and the subsequent hive quilt pieces included at the start of each chapter were from my mother. My mother is a quilter, and when I was growing up, each Wednesday after school she hosted a quilting circle at our church. Several elder women would meet there, and they would chat and sew quilts on large frames to raise money for various church projects. My mom was always on the lookout for vintage quilt tops in resale shops that they could easily place on the frame. She and I found these pieces at a resale store, and I fell in love with them. I begged her to keep them, and she did. Eventually she sewed the pieces together herself and created the quilt seen on the front cover of this book. The quilt and leftover pieces sat for years, until one Christmas while I was writing this book, my mom gave me the quilt and the pieces. This was the best present: a small reminder of the creative community that helped shape me—the hive of quilters, sewing community together. Quilt plans (front) Description: This image shows the front side of a tattered piece of paper with cursive handwriting written in pencil. The writing on the paper illustrates a honeycomb plan for a quilting project and a list of colors and numbers. A small hexagonal shaped piece of fabric is attached to the paper by a small pin and represents the honeycomb template for quilting. The paper appears weathered, discolored, folded, and ripped in a few places. https://s3-euw1-ap-pe-df-pch-content-public-p.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/9781003193289/7c5ea2d5-1f52-455f-bfe8-2092773b4cfa/content/fig9_1_C.jpg" xmlns:xlink="https://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"/> Quilt plans (back) Description: This image shows the back side of a tattered piece of paper with cursive handwriting written in pencil.
