ABSTRACT

Instructional resources (IR) constitute an integral aspect of instructional delivery. Teaching without the employ of relevant instructional media is not likely to lead to the realisation of the instructional objectives. Thus, in teaching any given subject, a prospective teacher would require some aids that would be employed to facilitate his or her teaching. Therefore, this study was carried out to expound on the importance of IR in the teaching and learning of Islamic studies. Specifically, the study focusses on the presentation of the definitions of the themes, elucidation of concepts and analysis of the principles guiding the selection and utilisation of IR in teaching Islamic studies. An analytical method was employed. Information was sourced from textbooks, empirical studies and electronic sources. It was revealed in the study that no branch of Islamic studies does not require the application of instructional media during the teaching-learning process. IR ranging from audio, visuals, audio-visuals, print, projected, non-projected media, community resources and human resources are all resources that could be applied in teaching all aspects of Islamic studies. It is, therefore, reiterated that Islamic studies teachers need to be conversant with the knowledge and principles guiding the selection and application of instructional media so as to enhance professionalism in their teaching activities.
