ABSTRACT

Lifelong learning is self-initiated training a person has to undergo for his/her personal development. It is generally used to indicate the learning that takes place outside formal learning institutions and is not limited to a certain period of time. The purpose of this chapter is to provide insight into the concept and practice of lifelong learning in Islamic education. It also highlights the importance of lifelong learning for the professional development of Muslim teachers, especially in what concerns teaching methods, mastery of teaching technologies and student management. The chapter features the following contents: introduction, explaining the background and the purpose of the chapter; lifelong learning among teachers: meaning, aspects and objectives; the Islamic religious foundation of lifelong learning; and lifelong learning and Islamic education teachers’ professional development.
