ABSTRACT

The consumption of non-human animals on a massive scale globally has profound negative consequences for animals and planetary and human health. The role of men and masculinities is significant in the human exploitation of other animals as well as in advocating for their interests. Men consume more meat than women globally and dominate among the intellectual leaders of the animal advocacy movement. This chapter examines men and masculinities in the context of contemporary animal advocacy organizations and organizing. It is explored how masculinized values and strategies manifest themselves in the animal advocacy movement and the implications of these for meeting the movement’s goals and for building a more inclusive movement. While foregrounding gender, it is considered how its intersections with other categories, such as race and class, shape the movement’s exclusions. The chapter argues for the importance of intersectional activism and building alliances with other progressive social movements. The potential of vegan men and masculinities is examined, as a way towards developing less exploitative human–animal relations and more sustainable masculinities.
