ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the minimum learning outcomes known as Threshold Learning Outcomes (TLOs) of bachelor graduates in sociology as developed by The Australian Sociological Association (TASA) in 2012. These standards were developed in conjunction with TASA membership and national and international experts in the discipline. In Australia, university degrees are regulated by the Australian Qualifications Framework which set standards and the general attributes graduates must attain for specific qualification levels. However, the TLOs refer to discipline features and outline minimum standards regarding discipline specific knowledge, skills, and professional capabilities that graduates are expected to demonstrate. Many graduates exceed these minimum standards. The establishment of the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency and changes in the regulatory environment prompted the development of the TLOs which reflect similar changes taking place overseas.
