ABSTRACT

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly used in the context of migration to perform tasks including identity checks, border security, and control, and processing of visa and asylum applications. While there are advantages in deploying these technologies, they may also present important risks. For instance, depending on how they are designed and deployed, AI systems may hinder the protection of migrants’ human rights. This chapter analyses the key issues concerning AI in migration, evaluates the challenges brought about by these technologies, and examines how they may affect the future of international migration.
