ABSTRACT

CHAPTER TEN on “Towers of Silence in India” provides the architectural plan of a typical tower and an exhaustive list of 115 towers in India including few in Karachi (now in Pakistan) and Aden (now in Yemen). These Towers are the places where dead bodies are kept for the flesh-eating birds. The list gives out details of the place, donor's name, and the date of consecration. Listing of Towers of Silence shows that by 1889, the Parsee population was spread in many parts of South Asia. Other than Towers of Silence, there are also separate burial places for Parsees at many places in India and other countries such as Macao, Canton, Singapore, Hong Kong, Colombo, Rawal Pindi, Peshawar, Mooltan, Zanzibar, and London.
