ABSTRACT

In CHAPTER TWELVE the first part details the two kinds of death registers of Parsee families residing in a neighbourhood in Broach (now Bharuch, district in south Gujarat), namely vahi or Disa-pothi and the other Nam-grahan. Vahis are kept both by the family (in connection with its own members) and by the family priest (of all the families of which he is the priest). The death register of nam-grahan is mainly maintained by every Parsee family. These registers are significant for their use in the performance of rituals of ancestor worship, and for rituals honouring the dead. The second part of chapter mentions about a Parsee priest in Broach in 1702 and the story of his martyrdom because of his resistance to his conversion to Islam.
