ABSTRACT

CHAPTER SIXTEEN lays out a discussion on more than 150 years old Parsee deed of partition of property in a Parsee family of Nowrojee, a landlord in a village of south Gujarat dated back to 1892. The property deed is between his heirs of three sons, his widow, and three grandsons of Nowrojee's deceased son. The important part of the deed is the division of the number of employed slaves, which somehow represents a form of slavery. The deed shows a complicated division of slaves showing their consideration as a property which could be divided even into two halves, i.e., he or she could simultaneously have two masters. There is also a detailed description of the form of slavery practiced, and the roles and duties of the slaves.
