ABSTRACT

CHAPTER TWO is on cradlesongs commonly sung by Parsee mothers to lull their child to sleep. As an expression of affection such songs often present important features of Parsee life and community. For instance, in such songs one can sense the marital world view of a woman in terms of her desire to have a good husband, not to be childless, her devotedness to children, husband and whole family, the importance of family circle, prominent part of flower decorations in their lives, dressing pattern, and importance of fire. All the cradlesongs are full of expressions of prayers, hopes, joys, long-life, togetherness, and auspicious life. Interestingly these cradlesongs have passed on orally from mother to daughter.
