ABSTRACT

CHAPTER SIX focuses on the similarity between some of the Parsee marriage customs and the Hindus, especially the Hindus of Gujarat. Resemblance lies between these two communities in terms of their culture in the concept of purity pollution, which is prevalent among the Hindus. Some of the comparable rituals, ceremonies among Hindus and Parsees respectively are tying Mangalsutram vs. Rehal, hand-fastening by the father vs. hand-fastening by the priest, tying the bridal knots (ends of upper garments) by priest vs. tying skirts of the couple by friend or relatives. Other rituals like holding curtain, throwing the rice, washing bride and bridegrooms feet, bride and bridegroom eating together from same leaf or plate, commonly found among both communities.
