ABSTRACT

South Wales had the worst river pollution in the country at the time of this meeting and subsequent press report. This was a combination of the usual problem of human effluent being deposited there added to the accumulation of waste from the particularly intensive industrialization of the region. The report of the RSA meeting paints a bleak picture of raw sewage, industrial ashes and untreated toxic wastes entering directly into the region’s waterways. The Clerk was instructed to take the case before the magistrates, and get up evidence on the case. The liquid house refuse of hundreds of houses built on each side is discharged into the brook through as many private drains, so that the liquid flowing along its bed partakes, by the time it reaches the river Rhondda, more of the character of sewage diluted with water than a stream of water contaminated with sewage.
