ABSTRACT

From the country, presenting a series of firm and level plains, it is admirably adapted for the construction of a railway. From the line being of moderate length and complete in itself, having an important tow n at either terminus, thus of necessity forming the most important portion of any system of railways, all other form of transit, which shall follow the course of the Valley of the Indus or its tributaries. The country, however, between Mooltan, Lahore, and Umritsir, is singularly favourable for a railway, being almost level throughout, and having no rivers of any magnitude to cross. For the rivers, it were preferable, instead of improving the navigable stream, to concentrate all efforts on the provision of powerful steamers of the smallest possible draught. It is understood that possibly the Scinde Railway Company may be disposed to extend their line northwards.
