ABSTRACT

The current global neoliberal capitalist system has created an existential crisis for humanity. Neoliberalism, increasing socioeconomic inequalities, securitisation policies, growing racism and increasing oppressive measures by neoliberal and managerial governments have transformed social work into a profession that is mainly concerned with control and the protection of the market and the neoliberal system of governance. Social work as a human profession committed to socio-economic justice should emancipate itself from neoliberal boundaries in order to be truthful to its global declarations about equality, equity and justice for all people beyond discriminatory categorisation. It is argued that social work, in order to survive as a profession in humanity's – and not in the market's – service, needs to choose a revolutionary path in alliance with those in need of social work intervention and other activist organisations and groups to struggle against global structural and institutional inequalities and oppressions.
