ABSTRACT

Neoliberalism and the specific US system of private, corporate insurance dominated health care delivery are, in theory and practice, fundamental antithetical to social work’s ethical foundations and have a corrosive impact both on social worker and on the individuals and families with which we work. There is an urgent need to seize the moment provided by the current crisis to take anti-oppressive social work practice to the next level: to further develop and implement a comprehensive, theoretical and practical model of genuinely liberatory social work. This chapter will introduce readers to the Liberation Health framework of radical mental health practice; an anti-oppressive model of clinical practice which integrates analysis of the socio-political forces into assessment and intervention planning with individuals, families and communities.
