ABSTRACT

Three years after the Sustainable Development Goals were adopted, it is doubtful whether their objectives will be achieved by 2030. This chapter is conceived and constructed on the basis of the hypothesis that the negative impact of the land grabbing could pre-empt the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. It draws from the analyses and critique of the negative impact of land grabbing in illustrating the potential difficulties of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. It argues that actions directed towards achieving any of the goals could, in the face of persistent land grabbing, have considerable unintended adverse impacts on other goals and the notion of sustainability. It concludes with the argument that the phenomenon of land grabbing constitutes a huge impediment to the realisation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
