ABSTRACT

In past decades, art museums have entered the digital realm and avidly adopted virtual strategies for education and interpretation. Art museums have also moved beyond the physical premises to promote their educational goals in the virtual domain. In this chapter, we provide an overview of the use of virtual technology and online resources which is helping transcend the learning experience within and beyond the physical space of museums. The chapter is structured in four sections: (1) the major transformation of museum education triggered by the digital revolution and the impact of COVID-19 that led to the changing educational landscape, (2) an overview of the application of virtual and digital technologies in the physical museum premises, (3) an overview of the virtual and digital technological applications contributing to learning in the digital realms of museums, and (4) a review of relevant studies, initiatives, and projects.
