ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors provide an overview of communication accommodation theory. Communication accommodation theory focuses on the communications adjustments individuals make in our personal and social relationships. Following a discussion of the main tenets of the theory (e.g., types of accommodation, motives for communication adjustments) and a brief historical overview of the development and application of the theory to a variety of social and relational contexts, the chapter highlights how the theory informs our understanding of interpersonal communication and integrates an intergroup orientation toward interpersonal relationships.
