ABSTRACT

Critical race theory (CRT) is a critical theory that explores how race is created and sustained throughout society to maintain White supremacy. A critical race approach to interpersonal communication highlights how our everyday interactions can either maintain White supremacy, or disrupt it. In this chapter, we explore the intellectual tradition of CRT and its main tenets. We then highlight how interpersonal colorblind rhetorical tools can help interpersonal communication scholars to explore CRT, counter-narratives and interpersonal colorblind rhetorical tools. Lastly, we highlight practical and research applications of this theory, as well as evaluations.
