ABSTRACT

This chapter traces the theoretical lineages of intersectionality to its origin, maps the contours and complications of its interdisciplinarity and ubiquity, and offers ways intersectionality, as a critical social theory, interacts with interpersonal communication. The chapter argues that by understanding intersectionality, not only as an account of identity, but as a critique of power, interpersonal communication scholars can uncover how identity, oppression, and social inequities influence interpersonal interactions.
