ABSTRACT

In this chapter, Manning and Adams outline the intellectual tradition of queer theory within interpersonal communication studies. In particular, they identify queer theory’s primary features, goals, and scholars; offer numerous examples and practical applications of queer theory within relational contexts; and discern future queer commitments for interpersonal communication research. In addition to including a brief historical overview of queer theory, the chapter offers an overview of queer-oriented topics and concepts including heteronormativity, the visibility and invisibility of sexualities and genders, and how queer theory can be used to challenge binary assumptions related to sexualities and genders. The authors also present future directions for interpersonal communication research.
