ABSTRACT

Over the last few years, the way of working inside organizations has been evolving at a very fast pace due to three main phenomena: (1) digital transformation with its impact on organizational processes and professional roles; (2) the quest for sustainability at both an individual and organizational level; and (3) the COVID-19 pandemic that boosted the adoption of remote working solutions. This transformation resulted in an unprecedented working context mixing in-presence and remote working: a hybrid workplace. This chapter investigates the pillars around which to build a hybrid workplace able to support sustainable engagement over time. The first one is a change in organizational culture and required competencies. The second one is the redesign of physical workspaces considering that fewer people are working in company buildings and the need for layouts facilitating knowledge sharing, creativity, and socialization. The third one is the adoption of technologies for the creation of communication arenas enhancing employee voices, horizontal communication, and knowledge sharing. The evolution toward the hybrid workplace context raises several questions. In order to offer an answer, this study gathers findings through mini-case studies. The chapter ends with implications for practice, learning outcomes, and further questions to be investigated in the near future.
