ABSTRACT

The focus of the chapter will be on ecofeminism in contemporary Nordic literature. Today the Nordic countries, as elsewhere in the world, have seen a veritable explosion of literature dealing with climate change, ecological disasters, and generally dystopic or apocalyptic scenarios for the planet’s future. Very little published literature is explicitly feminist or ecofeminist, although the perspective opens for pertinent readings regarding gendered stereotypes of the protagonists, the causes of catastrophe, the treatment of people and animals in the face of threat, and the characteristics and values that are depicted as crucial for the ability to save humanity. The article includes samples of literature in Finnish, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Icelandic, and Sámi, and does not aim to be exhaustive, but rather to draw attention to recurring ecofeminist themes in the Nordic literary space.
