ABSTRACT

Supporting the critical role of supervision in play therapist development is guided by the purposeful use of clinical supervision models to guide the professional development and evaluation of supervisees. Supervision models provide the framework for understanding development and developing supervisory interventions. This chapter provided an overview of key developmental, psychotherapy-based, and process models of supervision and applies each model reviewed to a play therapy supervision case. As standards for professional education, experience and supervision in play therapy continue to increase in specificity; play therapy supervision must become viewed as a specialized area of play therapy practice. Effective play therapy supervision is derived from clinical supervision models which provide the essential conceptual framework for supervisors which aid in conducting cohesive supervision that addresses supervisees’ needs.
