ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the importance of evaluation in play therapy supervision through the developmental lens of the Integrated Developmental Model of Supervision alongside the professional play therapy competencies endorsed by the Association for Play Therapy (APT). The supervisory process is explored with special emphasis on the role of gatekeeping and its connection to the evaluation of supervisees through a relational lens. With interpersonal considerations in mind, the authors also discuss how evaluation impacts the supervisory relationship and how supervisors can understand the relationship and address challenges using the Attachment Caregiving Model of Supervision. Practical tips are woven throughout the chapter that address building the supervisory relationship and evaluating the supervisee. Formal and informal methods of evaluation and supervisor strategies are discussed that specifically target the supervisee’s progress towards APT’s competencies in knowledge and understanding of play therapy, clinical play therapy skills, and professional engagement in play therapy.
