ABSTRACT

In this context, the present paper explores the process of female migration in Odisha at its source location. While collecting information from the skill training centre and qualitative interviews with its women trainees and also returned migrants from KINFRA apparel industries, such trends of recruitment and migration of female trainees came to be noticed in the present study. A similar DRDA arranged migration is also found in Ganjam district of Odisha which is known as project Skills for Employment in Apparel Manufacturing (SEAM). In Ganjam district of Odisha, the SEAM training centre named 'Vikas Apparel Training Centre' has been working over the last ten years. The migration of youth and largely female trainees from the villages of Odisha to the garment industries of other states including Kerala shows that the relative deprivation and lack of economic opportunities in their respective villages have pushed them to work outside for the betterment of their livelihoods.
