ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses the impact of the creation and development of the professional Portuguese football league ‘Liga Portugal’ on professional football in Portugal. The main topics covered in this chapter include the historical formation of this professional league and the economic aspects of the league considering the context of football in Portugal and Europe. The chapter also examined the changes that occurred in the market of football at a regional and global level, and how Liga Portugal was responsible for its transformation. Finally, this chapter discusses the processes that have characterised the management of football in Portugal, with particular attention to how the league has leveraged the development of football in that country.
