ABSTRACT

The traditional games and sports of the Iberian Peninsula are one of the main tourist attractions of the region. This chapter aims to analyse the possibilities these recreational activities represent for the sports industry. Therefore, we will base our analysis on two different points of view: First, as activities that are in themselves tourist attractions, such as traineras in the Basque Country or wrestling in the Canary Islands. And secondly, as activities that can be practiced and that could form part of the tourist attractions and services, for instance, the game of Malha in Portugal or the Camino de Santiago (Way of St. James) in the Peninsula. Conclusions show the great potential of these traditional games and sports as tourist attractions in this sector of the sports industry, both as public sporting events and as activities for tourists.
