ABSTRACT

In Portugal, sport governance is highly influenced by the state. Following the 1974 Revolution, several important changes were implemented to the Portuguese legislation that significantly impacted the governance of sport. During that time there was a growing concern by the Portuguese authorities to legislate and increase the control of the entire sport system. Furthermore, sport financing in Portugal is highly subsidy-dependent on the State and in many instances falling short of the needs of many sport organisations. In this chapter we provide an overview of sport governance in Portugal, the role played by major sports organisations, while also discussing the impact of several legislations.
