ABSTRACT

Phenomenology has contributed a great deal to the debates over race and racism in recent years, especially in critical philosophy of race. Phenomenology is particularly suited methodologically for advancing these debates, due to its first-person orientations. This chapter examines a theoretical framework that contributed to the development of phenomenological approaches to race debates in philosophy, examine current debates, and analyze why it has been politically effective in including philosophers of color in philosophy, thereby changing the face of philosophy itself. At the end, the chapter also considers possible contributions in a wider philosophical context.
