ABSTRACT

The volume’s editorial conclusion reviews the major findings and conclusions stemming from the chapters, and the ways in which “diversity politics” is also about diverse polities, necessitating that attention be paid to context. The concluding chapter considers the relevance of these insights in relation to three questions—What is multiculturalism? Is multiculturalism working? What should become of multiculturalism? The concluding chapter also considers the case for the continued value of a revamped and modernized multiculturalism that is attuned to the complexity of the politics of diversity in the 21st century. The complexities include the exacerbation of racism in the age of populism and during the global pandemic as well as emerging discussions on citizenship and belonging that are now set against the backdrop of 50 years of multiculturalism. Within this context the critical importance of civil society in the 21st century and the need for an emboldened politics of diversity and a solidaristic multiculturalism is advanced.
