ABSTRACT

From analyzing and discussing different approaches to the study of algebra structure sense, such as the works of Hoch and Dreyfus (2004), Kirshner (1989), and Novotná and Hoch (2008), we posit that there is a need to deepen the knowledge of the internal structure and order of algebraic expressions, as well as the factors that come into play in the processes related to awareness of such structure. Based on this approach, this chapter serves as a gateway to other chapters that provide elements of a different nature (historical, psychological, semiotic, didactic, technological), which contribute to advancing towards a conceptualization of structure sense, based on theoretical foundations and with empirical support.
