ABSTRACT

We focus on the role of transformational aspects of algebraic activity and the construction of meaning (or signification processes) during the process of appropriating the structure sense of algebraic texts. For such purpose, we use the basis of analysis of the productions of two students when working with the Expression Machine (described in Chapter 4) designed for the project Developing Algebra Structure Sense in a Digital Interactive Environment with an Adaptive System. In a final section, we revisit the notion of algebra structure sense (ASS) in terms of the transformational aspects of algebraic activity and the semiotic elements we introduced for its interpretation. We believe that the contributions of this chapter are of interest to research on the development of algebraic thinking, as well as to research on the didactic use of technologies for learning algebra.
