ABSTRACT

This closing chapter is dedicated to recapping what was said in the preceding chapters on the notion of structure sense. We pick up the threads of elements related both to aspects of the intrinsic structure of mathematical objects (specifically objects of symbolic algebra) and to processes of semiosis and manipulation of objects, which take place when subjects interact with the latter. Additionally, the role played by technology learning environments in this subject-structure relationship is discussed, and the idea of conceiving “levels of structure sense” (which correspond to levels of complexity of the expressions themselves and algebraic tasks associated with them) is advanced.
