ABSTRACT
The competence of teacher is a significant factor affecting the quality of education. This chapter examines the issues of teachers' perceptions of teacher competence and their level of data literacy (DL) through two surveys in the northern and western regions of Mainland China, respectively. The first study focuses on the professional competence of front-line teacher and the factors affecting their teaching ability while the second further explores the status quo of the development of teacher's DL. One thousand two hundred and ninety-six and 1443 front-line teachers joined the two studies, respectively. Combined with two surveys with different orientations, the findings revealed that there seemed to reveal some probable differences between novice and less experienced teachers and more senior and experienced teachers in their perceptions. These initial patterns call for further research and generate implications for teachers' professional development in China.
