ABSTRACT

The integration of ICT into Germany's schools and teacher education has been more challenging than expected. The unfavourable results of international studies such as the International Computer and Information Literacy Study (IEA-ICILS) as well as national studies showed several areas in teacher education requiring improvement, specifically ICT use for teaching and learning. With a nation-wide strategy for ‘Education in the Digital World’, initial aims for schools and students' competencies were developed in 2016 and for the first time, explicitly expressed the need for the modernization of teacher education and teachers' professional development in the digital age. Moreover, the standards for teacher education were updated in 2018 and now cover aspects of teaching and learning with ICT as well as teacher competences related to innovation processes and ICT-related school improvement.
