ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with patterns within regions during the early modern period. Partly because of new contacts, a number of regions substantially redefined key characteristics between 1450 and 1750, setting up new comparative opportunities as well. This would include the West, Latin America, Russia, and Japan. Three major Islamic empires created new precedents in the Middle East and India. China and Sub-Saharan Africa adapted their very different traditions, with less overall political and cultural change.
