ABSTRACT

This chapter summarizes the key changes to the 2022 ethics code, which consist primarily of a reorganization of topics and a reduction from ten to six categories. The 2022 code includes the addition of about 20 new standards (some are major revisions of previous standards). There is a major emphasis on a new topic that involves cultural responsiveness and the importance of understanding cultural factors associated with client behaviors that are under consideration for therapy or treatment. Another new topic in the 2022 code has to do with behavior analysts having a sensitivity to their own biases and how biases can come across in their interactions with clients and “stakeholders” (another frequent term). Behavior analysts are advised to modify their biases so as not to offend their clients. Behavior analysts are also advised to shape on the biased behavior of their supervisees toward the same end. A large change in the 2022 version of the code is the allowing of giving and receiving gifts with clients. Finally, one important topic involves the way to properly transition clients to another provider or to discontinue services. Diversity, social media, and advertising are all new topics addressed in the 2022 code.
