ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an array of types of behaviors that are exhibited by “civilians,” but which are not acceptable when a person becomes a professional. These include doing favors, engaging in gossip, telling “white lies,” and showing appreciation via gift giving that quickly morphs into dual relationships, which are not allowed. Dual relationships may affect a behavior analyst’s professional judgment. As respected professionals, behavior analysts must avoid these bad habits and customs and learn to always operate honestly and ethically, lest they give society the wrong impression. Although it may be a frequent request, behavior analysts cannot offer free advice in casual conversations, and they must take responsibility for their actions.
